Facebook adds hashtags, delighting marketers

The social network will introduce one of Twitter’s most iconic markers, the #hashtag, which could help marketers greatly amplify their campaigns. Hashtags used in an advertising campaign through other channels can be amplified now by including them in Facebook advertising.

Facebook has jumped on the hashtag bandwagon, popularized by other social networking services such as Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr and Instagram.

Starting today, hashtags will be clickable on Facebook, the company said in a press release on Wednesday. This will allow users to “add context” to a post, and link it to a wider discussion.

“Every day, hundreds of millions of people used Facebook to share their thoughts on big moments happening all around them. Whether it’s talking about a favorite television show, cheering on a hometown sports team or engaging with friends during a breaking news event,” noted the company.

It pointed out to date, there had not been a simple way to see the larger view of what’s happening or what people were talking about.

Hashtag opens up opportunities

The hashtags are just part of a first in a series of features that Facebook will be rolling out to connect conversations across social networks. “We’ll continue to roll out more features in the coming weeks and months, including trending hashtags and deeper insights, that help people discover more of the world’s conversations,” the company added.

According to WebProNews, the hashtag can have pretty powerful ramifications for campaigns which will be familiar to markets with Twitter experience.

“The best part about Facebook hashtags from a marketing perspective is that it takes something marketers are already using it, and magnifying it greatly by utilizing Facebook’s huge user base,” it pointed out.

For example, hashtags used in an advertising campaign through other channels can be amplified now by including them in Facebook advertising.
